Matthew John Schultz is a sacred pipe carrier whose given name, Path Keeper, was bestowed by both Lakota and Mayan elders. For over 20 years, he has studied Indigenous healing traditions under respected elders and teachers from around the world, working with plant and other sacred medicines. His path includes extensive study with Mayan elders, where he was formally initiated in 2010. Most recently, he returned from Peru after working at an ayahuasca healing center, continuing his long-standing commitment to ceremonial and healing practices. In addition to his work in Indigenous healing traditions, Schultz is a multimedia artist, musician, inventor, filmmaker, designer, and sculptor. His body of work spans a wide range, from political satire to the healing Mandala Event, reflecting a career rooted in both creative expression and transformation. He is the author of The Dark and the Light. This memoir weaves together his experiences with sacred medicines and Indigenous rituals with deeply personal stories from his childhood, years of addiction, and his path to recovery. The book chronicles his travels around the world and his work with a wide range of healing modalities, seeking to educate skeptics, but also offering words of warning for those seeking out these practices.
